Google Business Profile edit not approved: why, and what to do

You changed your hours, your category or your business name, and it still says under review days later. Or Google quietly put the old details back. Edits are checked before they go live, and some kinds are checked much more carefully than others.

Which edits are checked most carefully

Google treats some details as much more sensitive than others:

  • Business name
  • Address and service area
  • Primary category
  • Phone number and website

Changes to these can affect who appears for searches, and they are the details spammers change most often. Expect them to be reviewed more closely. Moving your address after verification means verifying again, and a name change might.

Hours, descriptions, photos, services and posts are usually quicker.

Common reasons edits are not approved

  • The new details do not match what Google sees elsewhere. If your website, signage or other directories still show the old information, Google may doubt the change.
  • Keywords in the business name. Adding words like "Best Plumber Dallas" to your name breaks Google's guidelines. See how to change your business name on Google.
  • A category that does not fit. Choosing a category for searches you want, as opposed to what your business is, is often rejected.
  • Too many edits in a short time. Many changes in a row can look suspicious and put the profile under review.
  • An address that looks wrong, such as a PO box, a virtual office, or an address in a different town from your other details.
  • The profile needs verifying again. Some edits are held until you complete verification.

What to do

  1. Wait for the first edit to finish before making any others. Stacking edits rarely helps.
  2. Make the outside world match first. Update your website, signage, invoices and main directory listings so they show the new details. Then make the edit on Google.
  3. Check for verification requests in your profile and complete them. Our guide to video verification shows what to film.
  4. Contact Google Business Profile support if an edit has been stuck for more than a week or two, or keeps being rejected. Explain the reason for the change and offer evidence: a business registration document for a name change, a lease or utility bill for a move.

Edits that keep reverting

If an edit goes live and then changes back, Google has usually found conflicting information. Search the web for your old details and fix every place they appear. See why Google keeps changing your business information for the full list of sources.

Good habits that keep edits smooth

  • Change details only when something real has changed
  • Keep your name, address, phone and website identical everywhere
  • Make one change at a time and let it settle
  • Keep the profile active with regular posts and replies to reviews

Questions owners ask

How long does Google take to review an edit?

Google says most edits are reviewed within about 10 minutes, but some take up to 30 days. Changes to the name, address or category tend to take longer. Making more changes while one is pending usually slows things down.

Can an edit cause my profile to be suspended?

Yes, particularly edits that add keywords to your business name, move your address, or change your category to something that does not match your business. Make changes only when they reflect a real change.

Why did my edit get approved and then reversed?

Google may have found conflicting information elsewhere, such as your website or other directories still showing the old details. Update those too, then make the edit again.
