Google Business Profile posts: what to post and how often
Posts are the part of your Google Business Profile you can change every week. They show customers you are active, give them a reason to call now, and keep your profile looking cared for. Here is how they work and what is worth posting.
The three kinds of post
| Type | What it includes | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Update | Text, a photo or video, and an optional button such as Call or Learn more | Recent jobs, news, seasonal reminders, tips |
| Offer | A title, start and end dates and times, and optionally a coupon code and terms; Google adds a View offer button | Seasonal deals, new customer offers |
| Event | A title with start and end dates; an event with no times shows as running all day | Open days, workshops, community events |
How to create a post
- Open your Business Profile while signed in to the account that manages it.
- Choose Add update (Google sometimes words this differently), then pick update, offer or event.
- Add your photo, write the post and choose a button if it fits.
- Publish. Google checks posts before they go live, which is usually quick.
Rules that get posts rejected
- Phone numbers Google cannot verify as yours. Google has been enforcing this more strictly since September 2026, so leave numbers out.
- Content that breaks Google's content policies, such as offensive or misleading content.
- Links to unrelated or unsafe sites.
- Photos that are low quality, unrelated or edited heavily. Google's photo guidelines ask for JPG or PNG files between 10 KB and 5 MB, at least 250 by 250 pixels, with 720 by 720 recommended.
What local businesses should post
The best posts are specific, local and recent. A photo of a real job with one or two sentences beats a generic graphic every time.
- A recent job: "New 50 gallon water heater installed in Frisco this morning. Same day replacement, old unit hauled away."
- A seasonal reminder: "Hurricane season starts June 1. Book a roof inspection before the storms."
- An offer: "Free sprinkler check with any spring lawn service booked before April 30."
- A common question answered: "Why is my AC running but not cooling? Three things to check before you call."
- Holiday hours or news: "Open the day after Thanksgiving for emergency calls."
How often to post
Once a week is a good rhythm for most businesses, and it is easy to keep up if you post photos from real jobs. Google archives posts older than six months, so a profile that stopped posting months ago looks abandoned to anyone who scrolls down.
Posts are one part of an active profile
Posts work best alongside fresh photos, replies to every review, accurate hours and a complete list of services. Our Google Business Profile optimization checklist covers the full routine, and posting every week is part of our Google Business Profile management.
Questions owners ask
Do Google posts help my ranking?
Google has never said posts are a ranking factor. What they do is show customers and Google that the business is active, and give people comparing businesses a reason to pick you. Treat them as a way to win the call more than a ranking trick.
How long do posts stay up?
Google says posts older than six months are archived unless they have a date range. Offers and events end when their dates end.
Can I put my phone number in a post?
Google may reject posts that contain a phone number it cannot verify as the business's own. Your call button is already on the profile, so leave numbers out of posts.
