Google reviews not showing on your business profile: why, and what to do
A customer tells you they left a review, but you cannot see it. Or your profile shows fewer reviews than your account does. A review that never appears is a different problem from one that disappears later, and it usually has a simple cause.
First, check from outside your account
Search for your business in a private browser window and open your reviews. What you see when logged in can differ from what the public sees, in both directions. If the review shows there, it is live.
Why a new review is not showing
It is still being checked
Most reviews appear within minutes, but some are held while Google's systems check them. Give it a day or two before worrying.
It was filtered as possible spam
Google's automated filters hold back reviews that look unusual, even genuine ones. Common triggers:
- The customer's Google account is brand new or has never been used to review anything
- The review was written on your premises, on your wifi or your device
- Several reviews arrived close together
- The review includes a link, a phone number or wording very similar to other reviews
- The review mentions a discount or reward
A removed or unpublished review can still appear in the author's own Maps profile, marked as not posted or private, which is why customers insist it is there.
It was posted on the wrong listing
Customers sometimes review an old listing, a duplicate, a different branch, or a business with a similar name. Search Google Maps for any duplicate listing of your business and check there.
Reviews are restricted on your profile
During a surge of suspicious reviews, Google can pause new reviews on a profile and show a notice. Google says the pause is usually lifted within a few days. Profiles caught breaking the fake engagement rules can have new reviews stopped for a set period. Check your Business Profile and your email for any notice.
The review broke a content policy
Reviews with offensive language, personal information or off topic content are removed or never published.
What to do
- Wait a couple of days if the review is very new.
- Ask the customer which account they used and check from a private window.
- Check for duplicates and notices on your profile.
- If a genuine review is clearly filtered, you can contact Google Business Profile support with the details, though support cannot always restore it.
- Change how you ask, so future reviews are not filtered: one customer at a time, from their own phone, with your direct link. Our review request templates are written to work that way.
If reviews that were showing have since vanished, that is a different problem. See why Google reviews disappear.
Questions owners ask
How long does a Google review take to appear?
Most appear within minutes. Some are held for checks and can take longer. If a review has not appeared after a few days, it has most likely been filtered.
Can the customer see their own review when nobody else can?
Yes. A review that Google did not publish can still appear in the author's own Maps profile, marked as not posted or private. Check from a private browser window to see what the public sees. The author can edit and repost it, or appeal once.
Can I ask the customer to post it again?
You can ask them to try again later, from their own phone and their own internet connection. Do not ask them to copy and paste the same text, which can be filtered again.
