How much does local SEO cost for contractors?

Local SEO prices vary a lot, from cheap monthly packages to expensive agency retainers. The number on its own tells you very little. What matters is what is included, how competitive your area is, and whether the work is aimed at more calls or just more reports.

What drives the price

Your trade. Some trades are far more competitive on Google than others. Roofing, HVAC, plumbing and water damage restoration tend to be crowded, because each job is worth a lot.

Your area. Ranking in the centre of a big metro takes more work than ranking in a suburb or a small town.

Your starting point. A business with an old, incomplete profile and messy listings needs more work up front than one that is already in decent shape.

What is included. This is the biggest difference between quotes. Two prices can look similar and cover very different amounts of work.

What you should get for your money

A proper local SEO service for a home service business usually covers:

  • Google Business Profile management: categories, services, photos, updates and answers, kept current every month
  • Reviews: a system for getting more, and replies to every one
  • Listings: your business details consistent across the directories that matter
  • Your website: pages that support your rankings and make it easy to call
  • Tracking: where you rank at many points across your service area
  • Reporting: plain monthly figures on rankings and calls

Increasingly it should also cover AI search, so assistants like ChatGPT and Google's AI answers recommend you.

Warning signs

  • Guaranteed first place. Map rankings change with where the searcher is standing, so nobody can honestly guarantee it.
  • Very fast results for very little money. The fastest tricks, such as keyword stuffed names or fake addresses, break Google's rules and get profiles suspended.
  • Long contracts before any results. Good work does not need to lock you in.
  • Reports full of numbers that never mention calls. You are paying for calls.
  • The agency owns your profile. You should always remain the owner of your Google Business Profile and your domain.

How to judge whether it is worth it

Work out what a new customer is worth to you. For many home service businesses, a single extra job a month covers the cost of local SEO, and anything beyond that is profit. Compare that with what you pay per lead elsewhere. Our comparison of local SEO and Google Local Services Ads goes into that in more detail.

Questions owners ask

Why do local SEO prices vary so much?

Because the work varies. Some packages are a one off profile setup, others are ongoing management, reviews, listings, content and reporting. Competition matters too: ranking a roofer in a large metro takes more than ranking a pest control company in a small town.

Is cheap local SEO worth it?

Sometimes, if it covers the basics properly. Be careful with very cheap packages that promise fast results, because the fastest tricks are often against Google's rules and can get your profile suspended.

How long should I commit for?

Local SEO takes one to three months to show movement, so judge it over that kind of period. You should not need to sign a long contract to give it a fair chance; month to month arrangements are common.
