How to add services to your Google Business Profile
Your services tell Google, and the people comparing you, exactly what you do. Most profiles list a handful, or none. Filling them in properly is one of the quickest things you can do to show up for more of the searches you want.
Categories come first
The services Google suggests depend on your categories. A business with the primary category "Plumber" will be offered plumbing services, and adding a secondary category like "Water heater installation service" can add more. If your categories are wrong, your services will be too. See the best Google Business Profile categories for contractors before you start.
How to add services
- Open your Business Profile while signed in to the account that manages it, from Google Search or Google Maps.
- Choose "Edit services" or open the services section of your profile.
- Tick the suggested services that you genuinely offer. Google lists these under each of your categories.
- Add custom services for anything you offer that is not suggested.
- Add a short description, and a price if you want to, to each service where you can. Services are grouped under your categories.
- Save.
How to choose and write services that help
List each service people search for separately
People search for the specific job: "water heater installation", "AC tune up", "teeth whitening". One service called "Plumbing services" tells Google very little. Twenty specific services tell it a lot.
Use the words customers use
Write "AC repair", not "Climate system remediation". Check what people type by looking at Google's own search suggestions for your trade.
Write a useful description
A sentence or two on what is included, who it is for and any area or availability details. For example: "Same day water heater replacement for tank and tankless systems across Plano, Frisco and Allen. Old unit removed and recycled."
Do not stuff keywords or cities
Lists of cities or repeated keywords in descriptions look spammy to customers and do not help. Keep each description natural. Google also rejects custom services automatically if the name includes prices, phone numbers, personal information or nonsense.
Services, products and your website
Services on your profile work best when your website backs them up. A page for each main service, explaining it properly and naming the areas you cover, gives Google a second strong signal and gives customers somewhere to land. If your website does not do that yet, see our websites built for calls.
Review them twice a year
Add new services as you start offering them, and remove ones you no longer do. An accurate, complete list is part of keeping your profile active, which our Google Business Profile optimization checklist covers in full.
Questions owners ask
Do services help my ranking?
They help Google understand what you do, which supports relevance for those searches, and they help customers see you offer what they need. Your categories carry more weight, so get those right first.
Why can I not find a service I offer?
The suggested services depend on your categories. If a service is missing, add it as a custom service, or check whether you are missing a category that fits your business.
Should I add prices?
Only if they are accurate and stable. A starting price can help for simple, standard jobs. For work that varies a lot, leave the price off and describe the service instead.
